edit Steps

  1. 1
    Chose a Firewall
    • Choosing the right Firewall is a very important step. You will need to decided if you want a simple and easy to use firewall, or a firewall that you can configuring everything it does.
    • Check Point Software makes Zone Alarm a free firewall for home users. It is a very powerful firewall but it may not work on older hardware.
    • Comodo Firewall Pro is a free for home use firewall from the Comodo Group. With this firewall you can edit a lot of settings but is not best for people who want a simple to use firewall.
    • Tall Emu Pty Ltd is the creator of the Online Armor which offers a free firewall for home use. This Firewall can work on older hardware and is simple to use but does not offer auto updating in the free version.
  2. 2
If you do not want to use a free firewall and have some money you can go buy a full security suite, almost all security suites now have firewalls built into the suite.
  3. 3
After choosing a suite install it according to the creators instructions. These instructions can normally be found from the creators firewalls website.
  4. 4
After the firewall installs it will most likely require a reboot. Reboot the computer and watch for any pop-ups from the firewall.
  5. 5
Read any pop-ups that appear on the computer after the restart, accept all of them from programs you use and trust.
  6. 6
If you see any pop-up's appear and you don't know what they are for go to your favorite search engine and type in the name of the program. Look for a source that says what the program does and decide what action to take upon what the website says.
  7. 7
Your computer should now be secure with the firewall, when it blocks any hacker attacks it will pop-up and alert you

edit Tips

  • Only use one firewall at a time
  • If a program is acting weird after you blocked a program go and unblock any files that are used with that program.
  • If the first firewall you chose does not work for you, you can uninstall it and try a different one.

edit Warnings

  • Back up your computer before installing any security suite.
